DLCC RANCH: An Elite South Devon Cattle Supplier
Focused On Maternal Genetics
DLCC is a South Devon seedstock operation committed to helping commercial cattlemen achieve profitability through crossbreeding and maternal heterosis. Our program strives to produce the most profitable genetics for our customer’s bottom line. This can only be done by trusting science and using it in all of our decisions. Research shows that crossbred females produce an average of one additional calf and over 600 more pounds of weaning weight than straightbred dams (NBCEC Sire Selection Manual). We are proud of how we’ve followed this principle with – whole herd reporting, data collection on every animal born, strict AI regimes, ultrasound data collection, and new and novel data. These practices produce “honest cattle, that give you real results.”
How DLCC Ranch Breeds Cattle
We believe in crossbreeding and the effects it brings our customers. South Devon cattle provide flexibility along with many desired economically relevant traits:
-
Outcross English Genetics

South Devon History
South Devon cattle, while less prevalent than in the past, first arrived in the United States in 1969 and then again in 1974. Demonstrating remarkable adaptability to diverse climates, this breed has gained a solid foothold on five continents. Wherever introduced, South Devons have earned acclaim for their impressive production capabilities and economic viability. Both red and black varieties of South Devons are now widely accessible across the globe.
Poundmaker & Navigator Cattle
The DLCC Ranch from Pierz, Minnesota has focused on raising premier South Devon, Poundmaker and Navigator cattle that fit the goals of the commercial cowman. The Poundmaker is a designed composite made up of South Devon and Angus breeds. Black or Red Angus qualify as the Angus influence. A Navigator is a designed composite made up of South Devon and Continental breeds.
The DLCC Ranch is located near Pierz, Minnesota, and has been owned and operated since 1980 by Dar and Lynn Giess, with their grown children.

COW COUNTRY NEWS
First Human Case of Avian Flu In Texas Raises Alarm
A Texas dairy worker has tested positive for the avian flu, marking the first identified human case of an illness in the U.S. that has sickened cattle across several states over the past few weeks.
The infection, only the second human case of H5N1 ever recorded in the country, is worrying public health experts who for decades have cautioned that avian flu could pose a serious threat.
The case is the only one state and federal officials have identified, and there is no evidence that it is being spread among humans. The illness is mild and the worker is expected to recover, said two people familiar with the matter. While there have been confirmed avian flu fatalities in other parts of the world, the U.S. has only ever recorded a handful of mild cases, according to the CDC.
The new human case follows recent cow infections in Texas, Idaho, Michigan and New Mexico that have raised alarm among public health experts who worry the virus’ spread to mammals could make it easier for the virus to infect humans.
The CDC, FDA and U.S. Department of Agriculture said the virus was found in a Michigan dairy herd that had recently received cows from herds in Texas. The USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories said the Michigan strain is very similar to the cow infections in Texas and Kansas, which appear to have come from wild birds.
