Agriculture Secretary Brooke Beef Packer Concentration Is The Problem
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said in a television interview that concentration in the beef packing industry needs to be addressed, called Brazilian ownership a “major issue” in the sector and suggested smaller processors produce “healthier” food.
In a Fox News appearance, she discussed issues of ground beef prices, imports and U.S. herd size. “Is there something that needs to be done about the processors?” host Will Cain asked in a followup question.
“One hundred percent, yes, when you have four major processors, two owned by the Brazilians,” Rollins replied, holding up two fingers in a V, “so half of that is not even American owned. You have a major issue when they are processing 85% of the beef in America. We have to decentralize, deregulate, invest in and incentivize smaller processors.

USDA’S Cattle Plan
The U.S. The Department of Agriculture revealed a plan on Oct. 22, 2025, to “fortify” the American beef industry, strengthen ranches, rebuild capacity and lower costs for consumers.  It includes a USDA-DOA Grazing Action Plan, Consumer Transparency, and to Build Demand Alongside Domestic Supply.

National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) Reaction To Argentine Beef
NCBA's family farmers and ranchers have numerous concerns with importing more Argentinian beef to lower prices for consumers. This plan only creates chaos at a critical time of the year for American cattle producers, while doing nothing to lower grocery store prices," said NCBA CEO Colin Woodall. "Additionally, Argentina has a deeply unbalanced trade relationship with the U.S. In the past five years Argentina has sold more than $801 million of beef into the U.S. market. By comparison, the U.S. has sold just over $7 million worth of American beef to Argentina. Argentina also has a history of foot-and-mouth disease, which if brought to the United States, could decimate our domestic livestock production.

United States Cattlemen’s Association (USCA) Reaction To Argentine Beef
The current price of beef on grocery store shelves reflects the true, inflation-adjusted cost of raising cattle in America today.  Already this year, the U.S. has imported more than 1.26 million metric tons of beef, primarily from Australia, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and New Zealand. Increasing imports under current rules ultimately benefits foreign suppliers and multinational packers, while putting U.S. ranchers on the losing end and depriving American consumers of honest transparency at the meat counter.

R-Calf USA Reaction To Argentine Beef
Global packers are importing beef from about 20 different countries, including Argentina, and because we do not have a mandatory country-of-origin labeling law for beef, the global packers do not need to reduce the price of imported product compared to domestic product. This negates any theoretical benefit of using more imports to drive down domestic beef prices. We urge the president to manage imports, restore mandatory country-of-origin labeling for beef, and put an end to the monopolistic control that packers and retailers have over our beef supply chain. Doing so will incentivize America’s ranchers to rebuild and expand the U.S. herd to meet our national security needs and ensure that consumer beef prices are determined by competitive market forces.

American Cattle Ranchers & Agricultural-State Republicans Express Concerns Over Argentine Beef Import Plans
President Donald Trump on Wednesday defended his record on behalf of American cattle ranchers as he faced criticism from beef producers and agricultural-state Republicans over his proposal to purchase beef from Argentina.
"The Cattle Ranchers, who I love, don’t understand that the only reason they are doing so well, for the first time in decades, is because I put tariffs on cattle coming into the United States, including a 50% Tariff on Brazil," Trump wrote. "They also have to get their prices down, because the consumer is a very big factor in my thinking, also!"

The Cattlemen’s Beef Board Sets $38.1M Budget
Beef promotion, consumer information, foreign marketing, producer communication and research will be among the top fiscal priorities for the Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) in fiscal 2026.
The organization that also manages the Beef Checkoff program is committing a total of $38.1 million to support the industry through a plan that also includes funding for 14 grant proposals, the group announced. The 2026 fiscal plan also includes: $25.1 million to the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, $7.9 million to the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) and $1.8 million to the Cattlemen’s Beef Board.
The CBB’s fiscal 2026 budget for the fiscal year that started Oct. 1 remains subject to USDA approval.

Trade Relations Between China & The U.S. Take Serious Turn
The ongoing trade issues between the United States and China are heating up as recent tariff announcements move closer to implementation. President Trump says he may end some trade relationships with China in light of the trading partner’s refusal to buy soybeans from U.S. farmers. China is the world’s largest importer of soybeans, but recently cut its purchase of U.S. soybeans after the imposition of 100% tariffs on Chinese-made goods on Nov. 1 or sooner. The trade dispute between the two superpowers have been strained since this spring after China did not renew operational permits of U.S. beef processing facilities, which have severely hampered shipments of U.S. beef products into China.

Kansas Cattle Thefts
With the continued surge in cattle prices, cattle thefts are also on the rise.  Pawnee County, Kansas was the next location to get hit.  And just one month ago in Cowley County Kansas, 30 head came up missing.  If you see any suspicious activity, report it to your state department of agriculture and the local sheriff’s office.

Slow Beef Cattle Herd Rebuilding In 2025
The Slow Cattle Cycle Of 2025
Cattle producers, consumers, and policymakers are all asking the same questions: How high will cattle prices go, when will they peak, and what happens next? The reality is that the cattle cycle remains uncertain, with no clear sign yet of a bottom in herd inventories or a timeline for rebuilding.
Through the first three quarters of 2025, there’s been no strong evidence of heifer retention. The mid-year Cattle Report showed the lowest beef replacement heifer inventory on record, and the 2025 U.S. calf crop is projected to be the smallest since 1941. Feeder cattle supplies outside of feedlots are also at historic lows.
While beef cow slaughter is down roughly 40% since 2022, stabilizing the herd, limited replacement heifers — down about 27% from the 2017 peak — mean herd growth in 2026–2027 will be slow.
Experts project cattle prices to keep climbing into 2026 and possibly beyond, with a gradual peak and sustained strength through the decade. A sharp drop appears unlikely, but the pace of herd rebuilding and heifer retention will determine how the market unfolds.
Bottom line: The U.S. beef industry is on a slow rebuild, and cattle prices are expected to remain historically high for years to come.

USDA’S Plan To Rebuild The Nation's Beef Cow Herd
The USDA is developing a plan to rebuild the nation's historically low beef cattle herd but will not produce direct payments to producers, according to Secretary Brooke Rollins.  Rollins said “We have no current plants to offer any payment to beef producers.  The government getting involved can completely distort the markets.  No plan is even under consideration to insert ourselves through payments into the beef cattle industry.”  Unquote.  Instead, USDA’s strategy will emphasize expanding access to working lands and developing risk-mitigation tools.  Rollins said more details will be released in mid-October.

Cattle Anthrax In North Dakota & USDA Farm Expenses
More Anthrax In North Dakota
Last weekend, the state of North Dakota confirmed its second case of anthrax this year in a beef cattle herd in Stark County, according to the state veterinarian’s office.
North Dakota State Veterinarian Dr. Ethan Andress urged producers in counties with past cases to consult veterinarians about vaccination and to be alert for unusual livestock deaths. He emphasized that effective vaccines are available but require more than a week to build immunity, with boosters needed annually for continued protection.
North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring noted that while anthrax occurs most often in northeastern, southeastern, and south-central North Dakota, it has been detected across nearly every part of the state. A few cases are typically reported each year, though some outbreaks have been much larger, such as in 2005 when more than 500 livestock deaths were confirmed.

USDA Addresses Farm Expenses
Earlier in the week, in Kansas City at the Agriculture Outlook Forum, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins spoke on the current state of the farm economy in the United States and addressed the ways President Trump is supporting American agriculture. U.S. farm production inputs are significantly more costly than four years ago, putting pressure on farmers' bottom line. Between 2020 and now, seed expenses have increased 18%, fuel and oil expenses increased 32%, fertilizer expenses increased 37%, and interest expenses increased by a whopping 73%. Additionally, labor costs increased 47% since 2020.
