Beaver County Shatters Records with Top 10 All-Time Highs for 9-Weight Steers
The national feeder cattle market remained red hot on Tuesday, especially for heavier weight classes, with all-time record highs set for the weighted average prices in the 800–899, 900–999, and 1,000–1,099 lb categories. Prices reached $325.79 for 8-weights, $319.39 for 9-weights, and $305.53 for 10-weights—levels once thought nearly unattainable. Records were set across the country, reflecting exceptional strength and broad-based demand in the heavyweight feeder market.
Beaver County Stockyards (Beaver, OK) blew the top off the record books on Tuesday, setting an incredible 30 new barn records across multiple weight classes, including all-time highs for 4-, 7-, 8-, 9-, and 10-weight steers—marking one of the most dominant single-day market performances in the barn’s history. Highlights included 18 head at 748 lbs bringing $364.00/cwt, the highest 7-weight price on Tuesday and one of the Top 5 all-time; 18 head at 829 lbs at $333.50/cwt, a new all-time high for 8-weights and one of six new Top 10 sales in that class; and 15 head at 1,031 lbs bringing $312.00/cwt, the highest 10-weight ever sold at the barn. But the biggest headline came from the 9-weights, where all 10 of the top 10 highest-priced sales in Beaver County history were set in a single day, led by 49 head at 900 lbs selling for a record $327.00/cwt.

Border Closed To Mexican Livestock Imports
Just days after reopening southern U.S. ports for Mexican livestock imports, the USDA has shut them down again due to a new case of New World Screwworm (NWS) in Veracruz, Mexico—just 370 miles from the U.S. border. This follows earlier cases in May that prompted the initial closure. The USDA's phased reopening plan is now on hold, citing the need for stronger containment efforts in Mexico. The halt threatens U.S. beef supply chains, especially in Texas. To respond, the USDA is pushing for stricter controls in Mexico and fast-tracking a U.S.-based sterile fly production facility to fight the pest.

1000 Pound Steers Bring All Time High Prices
Last week marked a historic milestone as 10-weight steers broke the $300.00 barrier for the first time ever—an achievement once thought out of reach. Incredibly, all Top 10 all-time high sales for 10-wt steers have now been set within the last 48 hours, redefining the upper limits of this weight class.

Cattlemen’s Groups React to “The One, Big, Beautiful Bill”
The U.S. Cattlemen's Association (USCA) and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) commented on the successful passage of "The One, Big, Beautiful Bill", which includes several provisions critical to the U.S. livestock industry and wins for America's family farmers and ranchers.
A few of the highlights include:
Livestock Indemnity Program 
Establishes a payment rate for losses due to predation at 100% of the market value and losses due to adverse weather or disease at 75% of the market value. 
Introduces additional payments for unborn livestock death losses incurred on or after January 1, 2024, at a rate determined by the Secretary, not exceeding 85% of the payment rate for the lowest weight class of livestock. 
Livestock Forage Disaster Program 
Allows for two monthly payments and specifying eligibility criteria based on grazing periods and expands the program by allowing it to kick in after 4 consecutive weeks of drought, rather than the previous 8 consecutive weeks
Emergency Assistance 
Provides emergency assistance for cattle with specific payment rates and eligibility criteria. 
Death Tax 
The bill increases the Death Tax exemption to $15 million per individual or $30 million per couple, adjusted annually for inflation. This means if the value of your farm or ranch plus equipment, cattle, and other assets are less than $15 million individually or $30 million as a couple
Foreign Animal Disease Prevention 
Specifies funding allocations for foreign animal disease prevention programs.

U.S Beef & Pork Exports To China Drop Sharply As Tariffs Climb
Skyrocketing Tariffs Crush U.S. Meat Trade with China
U.S. beef and pork exports to China plunged in late April and early May, driven by steep tariffs reaching 147% on beef and 172% on pork, according to the USDA Economic Research Service.
A temporary 90-day tariff cut — down to 32% for beef and 57% for pork — failed to revive U.S. meat shipments to levels seen in May 2024.
Trade Challenges Mount Ahead of August Deadline
Compounding the issue, China declined to renew registrations for multiple U.S. beef plants and cold storage facilities in February, further restricting exports, says the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). “The need for progress in trade talks is urgent,” said USMEF President Dan Halstrom, warning that tariffs could spike again on August 12. Exporters are already reconsidering their plans for the Chinese market.

Baylor County, Texas cattle thefts leave over 50 animals missing
The Baylor County Sheriff’s Office in Texas (BCSO) is investigating multiple reports of cattle thefts across the county. Over 50 baby calves, heifers, steers, momma cows and a bull or two have gone missing throughout the past couple of months. BSCO, along with a Texas Southwest Cattle Raisers Association Ranger, is looking to identify the suspect or suspects in these thefts. Livestock Theft is a third-degree felony and is punishable by up to 20 years per incident. State & National Records Broken For Feeder Cattle
Green City Livestock Marketing hosted its Annual Beef BBQ Customer Appreciation event with a powerhouse two-day sale that drew intense buyer demand and showcased top-tier cattle. Widely regarded as one of the most exceptional sales in the barn’s history, the event shattered records at every level—posting 35 all-time barn records, 13 new Missouri state highs, and 4 national benchmarks. The results speak to both the superior quality of the offering and the underlying strength of the current feeder market.
 
New highs were set across multiple weight classes, with several standout drafts making national headlines. On July 2, 2025, 11 head at 615 lbs sold for $425.00/cwt, marking the highest 6-weight steer price ever recorded in the U.S. That same day, 39 head at 705 lbs brought $369.00, the third-highest price nationally for 7-weight steers. Other highlights included 21 head at 433 lbs fetching $462.50 (4-weights) and 17 head at 846 lbs bringing $329.50 (8-weights), both setting new highs. The momentum began on June 30 with two heavyweight drafts: 63 head at 906 lbs sold for $315.25 (4th all-time nationally) and 67 head at 902 lbs brought $313.75 (10th all-time), both breaking barn and Missouri state records for 9-weight steers.

USDA to Reopen Livestock Trade with Mexico in Phases
The USDA has announced a phased reopening of U.S. ports to cattle, bison, and equines from Mexico starting July 7, 2025, beginning with the Douglas, Arizona port. This follows significant progress in Mexico’s New World Screwworm (NWS) response, including expanded surveillance, increased sterile fly dispersal (over 100 million per week), and no recent signs of northward NWS spread. USDA officials conducted on-site evaluations and determined that conditions now support limited trade resumption. Further port reopenings in New Mexico and potentially Texas will depend on continued improvements, case monitoring, and enhanced animal health protocols.

Walmart Launches First In-House Case-Ready Beef Facility in Kansas
Walmart announced the grand opening of its first-ever owned and operated case-ready beef facility in Olathe, Kansas. This milestone reinforces Walmart’s commitment to building a more resilient, transparent and efficient supply chain for Angus beef — helping Walmart provide quality beef options that meet demand and bring tremendous value to customers across the Midwest.
 
In 2022, Walmart made an equity investment in Sustainable Beef LLC in North Platte, Nebraska, as part of its continued efforts in creating an end-to-end supply chain for Angus beef. Sustainable Beef’s majority ownership is local and producer-centric, with cattle sourced from no more than a 250-mile radius to the plant in a region that has exceptionally high-quality cattle. Now, the newly opened, 300,000+ square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will package and distribute Angus cuts sourced directly from Sustainable Beef LLC to stores across the Midwest, bringing even greater transparency to customers seeking quality beef options at Walmart stores in the region.

USDA to Build $8.5 Million Facility Announced to Boost U.S. Pest Control
On June 18, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced a new sterile fly dispersal facility at Moore Airfield Base in South Texas. The $8.5 million investment aims to strengthen the USDA’s ability to detect, control, and eliminate the New World screwworm (NWS).
Border Closures Spark Action
On May 11, the U.S. suspended imports of live cattle, bison, and horses from Mexico after NWS was found 700 miles from the U.S. border. This followed an earlier closure in November 2024, which lasted until February 1, 2025.
Current Fly Production is Not Enough
The U.S. now relies on a joint facility in Panama producing 100 million sterile flies per week. But future eradication may require 400–500 million weekly, driving the need for domestic capacity.
What is the New World Screwworm?
NWS is a parasitic fly that lays eggs in wounds of warm-blooded animals. Larvae feed on live tissue, causing severe harm or death. The pest was eradicated in the U.S. by 1982, but recent cases near the border are raising alarms.

Asian Longhorned Tick Finds Its Way To Iowa
The Asian Long Horned Tick has been confirmed for the first time in Van Buren County, located in southeast Iowa. The Asian Long Horned Tick carries a protozoan parasite that infects red and white blood cells and causes bovine infectious anemia.
 
There are no approved treatments in the United States. The best way to protect livestock is through tick control methods and proper biosecurity to prevent blood-borne spread between livestock.
