How Jorgensen Land & Cattle Uses Line Breeding To Increase Heterosis

Strong Spring Run For Feeder Cattle Sales
Feeder cattle sales continue their strong momentum in prices being commanded this past week.  Easter Monday proved to be busy across much of cow country.  Joplin, Missouri led the charge by running 7600 head across the scales with Sioux Falls, South Dakota at 2482 head, Kingdom City, Missouri at 1161 head, Gainesville, Missouri at just a tick over a thousand head and Paris, Kentucky at 943.  
Joplin, Missouri was noted as a snappy market by Corbit Wall with good demand across all classes, noting feeder steers were steady to $15 higher and lighter weights $15 to as much as $50 higher.  He also pointed out that runs were unusually light, with far fewer load lots than normal, which limited what went into the index despite stronger trends.

Online Tool For Helping Fire Affected Producers In Nebraska
Kent Bacus of The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association shares why cattle producers are encouraged by USDA’s renewed push behind the voluntary Product of the USA label. 
For years, U.S. cattle producers have pushed to fix what they saw as a misleading labeling loophole—and now, that change is here.
Kent Bacus says the updated USDA rule finally tightens the standards behind the “Product of USA” label. He explains the concern was simple: imported beef could still carry that label, creating confusion for consumers and an uneven playing field for American producers.
Now, that loophole is closed. Under the updated rule, any product using the “Product of USA” label must come from animals that were born, raised, harvested, and processed right here in the United States. Bacus says that opens the door for real differentiation in the marketplace—and gives U.S. producers a clearer way to promote their product. Importantly, this is not a requirement—it’s a choice.
Companies can opt in to use the label, but only if they can verify and document that the product meets those full U.S.-origin standards. And while this isn’t about food safety, Bacus says it is about building trust. He calls it a marketing tool—one that helps connect consumers to where their food comes from and adds integrity to the label. Because today’s shoppers aren’t just buying beef—they’re buying the story behind it.

Nebraska Fire Relief
After more than 800,000 acres have burned in Nebraska wildfires, livestock producers are now searching for places to graze their animals.
The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association says there are two main options — both showing how neighbors are stepping up to help.
One option is feeding cattle hay. Donations are arriving by the truckload, but hay can still be expensive.
The second option is a free online tool called the Nebraska Grazing Exchange. It connects ranchers who need land with farmers who have pasture available.
People who want to help can sign up, list what they can offer, and connect directly with ranchers in need. Once a match is made, the next step is moving the animals to that land.
Laura Field, Executive Vice President of Nebraska Cattlemen, says support has been overwhelming. She says tough times like this bring out the best in the agriculture community.
Field says some ranchers have lost up to 70 or 80 percent of their summer grazing land, and may need to move cattle to entirely different regions — even out of state. But she says help is coming from all directions — across the country.
Field also says she doesn’t expect long-term economic damage. She says Nebraska’s beef industry is strong and resilient, and will weather this challenge.
While moving cattle — also known as rotational grazing — isn’t new, the situation right now is complicated.
Field says burned areas are filled with damaged equipment like fencing, water systems, and other infrastructure.
She says groups are working with state and federal partners to match needs with resources and get supplies where they’re needed most.
As for concerns about ranchers leaving the state, Field says the grass will grow back — and the cattle will return.
The Nebraska Department of Agriculture adds that grazing can actually help prevent future wildfires by reducing dry plant material.

Global Meat Trade & Demand
A series of market-moving events, including a strike at a JBS beef plant, geopolitical tensions involving Iran, shifting oil prices and tariff uncertainty, have yet to derail strong beef demand, as wholesale prices continued to climb, according to analysis by Drovers and Sterling Marketing Profit Tracker.
Market fundamentals have shifted in recent weeks. Lower fed cattle prices combined with higher boxed beef values improved packer margins while pressuring feedlots. For the week ending March 14, packer margins were estimated at a loss of $54.17 per head, narrowing from deeper losses in prior weeks. The beef cutout rose to $390.66 per cwt.
Feedlot margins turned negative, estimated at a loss of $48.79 per head. Elevated breakevens continue to  pressure feedlots despite strong demand.
Hamburger prices on restaurant menus are 14% higher in the last three years, but beef production costs jumped 32% since January 2023, according to a new report from food industry intelligence firm,  Datassential.
Burger inflation is roughly in line with broader restaurant prices, despite the effects of chronically tight beef supplies. Food away from home — which approximates all food service including dine-in, takeout and delivery — rose 4% in 2025 and is 13% higher since January 2023, according to the federal government’s Consumer Price Index.
The Datassential report pointed out that restaurant pricing strategy can keep prices on popular items in check to avoid hurting turnover, while causing cost burdens to be spread throughout the operation. Burgers in particular are a source of traffic, especially in the quick-service segment.

Packer Consolidation Under Washington Crosshairs
Efforts to scrutinize consolidation in the U.S. meat industry are gaining new momentum in Washington, as lawmakers from both parties increasingly target large packers amid persistently high beef prices.
In recent months, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has floated legislation aimed at restructuring the industry, while President Donald Trump has ordered the Department of Justice to investigate major beef packers for potential antitrust violations.
The unusual bipartisan convergence reflects mounting political pressure to address food affordability, even as economists and industry leaders say the fundamental driver of high beef prices lies elsewhere.
The renewed focus on meatpacker consolidation follows years of debate over the market dominance of the so-called “Big Four” beef packers (JBS, Tyson Foods, Cargill and National Beef), which together handle roughly 80% of U.S. cattle slaughter.
Trump last fall directed the DOJ to investigate whether large packers engaged in “Illicit Collusion, Price Fixing, and Price Manipulation,” while several Republican lawmakers voiced support for stronger antitrust enforcement.
At the same time, Schumer and other Democrats are preparing legislation that would attempt to curb consolidation across the food system, including potentially forcing meat companies to focus on a single protein.

Florida Ban On Lab-Grown Meat Update
Florida’s ban on cultivated meat will stay in place after a federal appeals court upheld the law in a ruling released Monday. The case was brought by Upside Foods, a California company that produces lab-grown chicken, after the law took effect in July of 2024.
A three-judge panel on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the ban does not conflict with federal laws regulating traditional poultry. The court said the state law doesn’t control how the product is made — only whether it can be sold — meaning federal law does not override it.
The decision also upholds an earlier ruling from a federal district court that dismissed the case.
Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, who supported the law, called the ruling a win for farmers and consumers.
Governor Ron DeSantis, who signed the bill, has also defended the measure, saying it protects Florida agriculture from what he calls “lab-grown alternatives.”
Florida was the first state to pass a ban on cultivated meat. Since then, several others — including Alabama, Indiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, and Texas — have followed.
The bans come as the lab-grown meat industry is still in its early stages. The Food and Drug Administration first approved cultivated meat for sale in 2022.
Supporters of the industry argue these state laws could slow innovation, cost jobs, and limit competition.
It’s not yet clear if Upside Foods plans to appeal the ruling.

Online Tool For Helping Fire Affected Producers In Nebraska
Nebraska producers impacted by recent wildfires now have a new resource to help locate grazing land for their livestock. The Nebraska Grazing Exchange is an online tool designed to connect cattle producers in need of pasture with landowners who have available grazing. The platform allows users to post listings or search for opportunities across the state. Officials say the exchange is especially important following the fires, which have reduced available forage and displaced herds in several areas. Producers needing assistance—or those willing to offer grazing—can access the Nebraska Grazing Exchange online to submit or view listings. State leaders say the effort is aimed at supporting recovery and keeping Nebraska’s livestock industry moving forward in the wake of the disaster.

Nebraska Cattlemen Offers Aid For Those Affected By Fire
Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen issued an emergency proclamation on March 13th in response to the fire, deploying the state National Guard to assist local fire crews. In an effort to help producers, the Nebraska Cattlemen Disaster Relief Fund activated the disaster relief account and is accepting monetary donations until further notice.

Thousands Of Workers Strike Against JBS
Thousands of workers for the world’s largest meatpacking company began a two-week strike Monday in Colorado, threatening to make already costly beef even more expensive for U.S. consumers.
The first walkout at a U.S. beef slaughterhouse in four decades follows accusations from union officials that the company retaliated against workers and committed other unfair labor practices. They said the company offered wage increases of less than 2% annually, which is below Colorado’s inflation rate. 
Union officials said 99% of the plant’s 3,800 unionized workers voted to strike. More than 2,600 showed up at the picket line by early Monday afternoon and others were expected to check in over coming days.
The union said its workers perform some of the most difficult and dangerous jobs in the country and deserve higher wages and better health care. It said JBS in many cases has charged workers $1,100 or more to offset the company’s expenses for personal protective equipment.
The strike comes at a 75-year low in U.S. cattle numbers, with a Jan. 1 inventory of 86.2 million animals — down 1% from the prior year. The decline has been driven in part by drought and low prices offered to ranchers. 
Meanwhile, beef prices have soared to record levels. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Brazil, a major beef exporter, have also curbed imports. Pressed to act on “affordability” issues after Republican losses last November, Trump accused foreign-owned companies of driving up U.S. beef prices and asked the Department of Justice to investigate.
 
The price for 100% ground chuck beef more than doubled over the past two decades from $2.55 to $6.07 per pound, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The increase has added to economic anxiety in the U.S. 
The Trump administration has promoted a trade deal with Argentina in efforts to lower prices for food, including beef.
According to a livestock market adviser for industry consultant Ever Ag, the Greeley plant has about 6% of the total U.S. beef slaughterhouse capacity.

Beyond Meat Faces NASDAQ Delisting
Beyond Meat, the once leading light of the plant-based protein business world, is in danger of being delisted from the NASDAQ stock exchange because its stock price has remained under $1.00 for more than 30 days.
The company, which is in the process of removing the word “meat” from its brand moniker, received a letter of warning from NASDAQ on March 4. It has 180 calendar days — actually until August 31 — to remedy the situation or face delisting. Its closing bid price must remain at $1.00 or higher for 10 days in order to be in compliance.
Beyond Meat went public in 2019 and at one point was valued at $14 billion. Its peak stock price was $234.90 in July 2019.and described the legislation as reckless election year pandering that threatens to damage a crucial industry at the center of every American Meal.

Blood Disease Spreading Across Missouri
The Asian Long-Horned Tick has been spreading a type of infectious anemia across the eastern United States by latching onto cattle.  Missouri getting hit hard.
 
The disease attacks the animal's red blood cells, causing severe anemia in cattle.
 
Side effects that have been reported are jaundice, weakness and pale mucous membranes.
 
While some producers across Northwest Missouri have not experienced this disease in their cattle, they are taking the necessary precautions to avoid the disease.
 
Reports have said the disease has been found in 60 counties in Missouri.

Fake News In Texas: Officials Say Deadly Virus Is Not Spreading In Feedlot Cattle 
Contrary to rumors spreading in Texas this week, agriculture officials are calling reports of a fast-spreading cattle feedlot virus "fake news." The rumors of a "yield-killer" feedlot virus with a climbing mortality rate in the Texas Panhandle began to spread in online publications and on social media over the weekend. One such report from agroinformacion.com said the news was drawing "immediate panic" from the beef industry, projecting a "brutal" hit to the market.
Several agricultural sources in the state have since stepped in to ease the concerns, saying health officials have confirmed there is no such disease present in the state.

JBS Workers Confirm Strike
Workers at the largest meat processing company in the world will strike at its Colorado plant, according to the labor union representing those workers.
The strike at JBS's plant in Greeley will start on March 16. The strike comes after the workers gave notice of cancellation of their contract due to alleged unfair labor practices. 
JBS was one of about 20 food companies that settled a 2024 federal lawsuit for over $200 million over employee wage fixing. JBS says it employs more than 270,000 people around the world — 3,800 of whom are based in Greeley, where JBS USA is headquartered — and pays $3.1 billion for livestock each year, making it the world's largest meat supplier.

Lawsuit Over Electronic Identification Tags
A lawsuit over the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s mandatory electronic identification ear tag rule for cattle and bison is moving forward, with a federal court request in South Dakota to set the rule aside. 
The New Civil Liberties Alliance or NCLA — which is representing ranchers, farmers, and livestock producers in the case — argues that the USDA and its Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service or APHIS unlawfully required electronically readable identification, or EID, ear tags for certain cattle and bison moving across state lines, replacing long-used visual tags.
According to the NCLA’s case summary, APHIS in 2013 allowed several forms of official identification for certain interstate cattle and bison movements, including both visual-only and electronically readable ear tags. But in May 2024, APHIS issued a final rule requiring that official ear tags sold for or applied to certain cattle and bison be readable both visually and electronically.
The plaintiffs’ March 5 summary judgment brief argues that the USDA did not adequately justify the change and that the rule imposes added costs on producers while failing to solve the agency’s stated traceability concerns. In the filing, plaintiffs said the rule “mandates that America’s ranchers and farmers use visually-readable electronic identification (“EID”) ear tags when moving certain cattle and bison interstate” and argued the rule “increases the cost of raising cattle by approximately $3 per head.”
The NCLA said the USDA had previously agreed visual-only tags were effective in tracing disease in cattle and bison and had allowed producers to choose between visual-only and electronically readable options. The group now argues the 2024 rule abandoned that flexibility without sufficiently explaining the change.
The organization also contends the current rule is internally inconsistent because it says EID ear tags are needed to reduce transcription errors tied to “human error,” while still allowing those same tags to be used visually in the same manner as traditional tags if producers do not use electronic readers.
The USDA, however, says animal disease traceability is important for quickly identifying where diseased and at-risk animals are, where they have been, and when they were there. On its Animal Disease Traceability page, APHIS says traceability does not prevent disease but “reduces the number of animals and response time involved in a disease investigation,” which in turn reduces the economic impact on owners and affected communities. APHIS also says it provides electronic ID tags to cattle producers at no cost through state veterinarian offices.
The case remains active in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota.

Mixed Reactions to Schumer Meatpacking Bill
Late last week Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) introduced the “Family Grocery and Farmer Relief Act” that aims to deconsolidate the U.S. beef-packing industry, address foreign ownership of beef-packing facilities, and focus on eliminating unfair and unjustly discriminatory pricing practices in retail and wholesale meat markets.
Schumer said the forthcoming food-price legislation would focus on consolidation in meat and agriculture, arguing that market concentration allows large companies to squeeze producers while raising prices for consumers. The proposal would also call for a review of foreign-owned meat companies operating in the U.S., potentially affecting firms such as JBS and Smithfield Foods.
This announcement received mixed reactions from leading cattle industry groups.  According to the Meat Institute, they say the proposal would require meat companies that process multiple species to divest operations and focus on only one species.   They say the proposal is absurd and described the legislation as reckless election year pandering that threatens to damage a crucial industry at the center of every American Meal.  
R-Calf CEO Bill Bullard said “Senator Schumer’s legislation targets the same concentration problems that President Trump has also prioritized. President Trump directed the Department of Justice to investigate the nation’s largest beef packers for potential collusion, price-fixing, and price manipulation — and issued an executive order directing the DOJ and FTC to form task forces to determine whether beef prices are being distorted throughout the supply chain. Senator Schumer’s bill similarly calls on the FTC to address concentration-driven distortions in retail beef prices.  He said this bipartisan attention is exactly what is needed to spark a meaningful, nationwide debate on restoring competition in cattle and beef markets.
